NFL Draft 2024: QBs Dominate First Round

Young, Stroud, Levis Off the Board Early

Panthers Trade Up for Alabama Star

DETROIT -- The first round of the 2024 NFL Draft kicked off with a bang on Thursday, as quarterbacks dominated the proceedings. The Carolina Panthers made the boldest move of the night, trading up to select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with the first overall pick.

Young, widely considered the best prospect in the draft, had a record-breaking season for the Crimson Tide, throwing for over 4,500 yards and 47 touchdowns. The Panthers, who have struggled to find a franchise quarterback since Cam Newton's departure, hope Young will be the answer.

The quarterback frenzy continued as the Jacksonville Jaguars selected Ohio State's C.J. Stroud with the fourth overall pick, and the Las Vegas Raiders traded up to take Kentucky's Will Levis at No. 5. Stroud, known for his accuracy and quick release, threw for over 3,600 yards and 41 touchdowns in 2023. Levis, meanwhile, showcased his dual-threat abilities with 3,100 passing yards and 16 rushing touchdowns.

In a surprising move, the Minnesota Vikings stood pat at No. 35 overall and selected South Carolina wide receiver Josh Downs, the first non-quarterback taken in the first round. Downs, who led the SEC in receptions in 2023, is known for his exceptional route running and sure hands.

With the trade for Young, the Panthers now hold three first-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft, giving them ample ammunition to continue building for the future.
